Yarn Bombing at its Finest
John Gale* - Father of Canberra - Statue Receives First Yarn Present

What this local news network,The RiotACT, didn’t have was the inside scoop.
Suzie Gilbert’s family of 8 took a trip…

Harry, age 14, and 5 other siblings challenged their mum to crochet a hat for the John Gale, Father of Canberra, Statue. Here is Harry with the resulting hat the night it was donned on Gale.
“On a recent visit to Queanbeyan my son wanted me to make a beanie for John Gale… So I did
lol!” That indeed, she did and it made the local news.
Which one of her children had the brilliant idea and how did they get it up there?!
It’s amazing to me that children bear the gift of recognizing their mum’s hooking crochet skills as an art indeed. Fourteen year old Harry was the first to suggest that Father of Canberra needed a new hat, and the others chimed in.
At the end, they were too busy laughing away to snap a photo of her husband tip-toeing to reach Gale’s head because the statue is about 1.5x the normal size of man.
When asked how she measured the sizing of the hat to know it would have fit, Suzie’s simple answer was, “I used a full 100gm ball of yarn I gauged his head on my hubby’s! Lol!! If it was too big for my hubby it was going to fit the statue! I was pretty happy with the fit! It was perfect!! Lol!”
A true hooker can appreciate all the “Lol!” inserted in there because the entire process is simply thrilling especially when you have a full family of supporters - WIN!
This may seem funny to you lot out there that don’t know the fine details of the art, but it’s like a chef or a baker who has mastered his/her craft and knows when they have the right amount of ingredients without measuring ahead of time. You can’t be off in your estimation or it will result in a non fitting hat (too small or too large).
John Gale’s statue and the whole yarny community may be in luck because this may become a legacy family tradition when the Gilberts head out to Qbn for future visits. Can’t wait to see photos of what they come up with next.
