Butterflies & Pineapple Lace Beanie

The Fall Fashion Series

The story of the Butterflies & Pineapple Lace Beanie or Skull Cap goes something like this… Once upon a time, I stumbled upon some gorgeous sock weight yarn by Deborah Norville - Serenity Sock Weight in Pink Sugar color. It is a blend and slow variegation yarn between shades of pink to deep rose with purple tint and I fell in love.

I didn’t know what would come of the yarn, but I did know it was going to be something I would love and cherish for ages to come, and you would, too. This was actually the first pineapple lace pattern that was written and tested in June awaiting its debut… and it’s finally HERE!

Invisible sc Join The Crochet Lounge™ Way – in the last stitch of the round, insert hook into the last stitch, draw up a loop, insert hook into the back loop only (blo) of the first stitch in the round, yo, draw up and through the loops on hook, leave a 6” tail, cut the yarn. Insert hook through both loops of the second stitch of the round, yo with tail draw yarn through. Insert hook into the front loop only (flo) of the last stitch of the round, draw tail through. From wrong side of piece, insert hook through the same last stitch in the round under both loops, draw tail to the inside and fasten off

Gauge

2” (5.08cm) after first 2 rounds - adjust hook size to obtain gauge

If your gauge is not matching the above within the first 2 to 3 rounds, it’s time to adjust - although mentioned before in the Pineapple Lace Sunhat that it is crucial in hat-making that your gauge matches in the increase rounds or your hat will end up being way too big or way too small, it is LESS critical on a hat made with sock yarn or highly stretchable material vs. 100% cotton.

If your stitching is resulting in a larger round height, you need to adjust your golden loop or drop down in hook size and use the hook that obtains gauge.Golden Loop - after inserting your hook into an indicated stitch, the Golden Loop is the loop you yarn over and draw up. The height of your row/round depends on how high you draw up the Golden Loop. This matters greatly in gauge matching if you are needing to follow hook size and or have already dropped down in hook size and cannot obtain gauge.

The Summer Elegance Edition

Pineapple Lace Sunhat

With this delicious Pineapple Lace Sunhat and all the Pineapple Lace Blitz posts to ensue, I have, once again, embarked on the hat designing journey that is going to soar with personal growth — yes, indeed, everything we face vs. avoid is a point of growth! :D Hooray for free crochet sunhat patterns as this hat debuts in The Crochet Lounge - The Summer Elegance Edition.

Pineapple Lace Sunhat Angle View | The Summer Elegance Edition | The Crochet Lounge | Free Crochet Sunhat Pattern

Up until the Eternal Love Slouch and the Eternal Love Baby Slouch, I have avoided creating hat designs because I am a tight crocheter and I didn’t think I liked gauge questions. One day, it dawned on me that the beautiful hats in my mind that ABSOLUTELY need to get created and posted because it would simply be a creative piece lost in time/space. Furthermore, it’s WONDERFUL to answer gauge questions and help troubleshoot projects.

Don’t hesitate to visit me on Facebook if you have any pattern specific or crochet related questions! The Loungers are fabulously helpful even if I may not have all the answers ♥

With that said, don’t forget to check your gauge and drop down hook sizes until you find one to match stated gauge!

Gauge

2” (5.08cm) after first 2 rounds - adjust hook size to obtain gauge

6” (15.24cm) after first 6 rounds - adjust hook size to obtain gaugePineapple Lace Sunhat Top View | The Summer Elegance Edition | The Crochet Lounge | Free Crochet Sunhat Pattern

Each round up until round 6 should add half an inch in radius (1.27cm) or 1 inch in diameter (2.54cm).

If you were on track for the first 6 rounds to 6″ (15.24cm) and kept the same tension throughout the pattern on the dc stitches, you would end up with a 7″ (17.78cm) height when you start to sc for the brim in Round 14 & 15.

Due to individual tension, this height can vary - and if you go to 8.25″ you are looking at covering down to the base of your ears <- may not be desirable on a sunhat.

If your gauge is not matching the above within the first 2 to 3 rounds, it’s time to adjust - it is crucial in hat-making that your gauge matches in the increase rounds or your hat will end up being way too big or way too small as the increase rounds determine the fit on your hat.

Measuring the diameter across the center of the crown lets you calculate the final circumference of the hat once the increases stop by using the formula pi*d (diameter) or 2*pi*r (radius). The pineapple lace portion of this particular pattern takes care of the rest of the head size expansion and comes back to fit snuggly on the forehead.

If your stitching is resulting in a larger round height, you need to adjust your golden loop or drop down in hook size and use the hook that obtains gauge.

Golden Loop - after inserting your hook into an indicated stitch, the Golden Loop is the loop you yarn over and draw up. The height of your row/round depends on how high you draw up the Golden Loop. This matters greatly in gauge matching if you are needing to follow hook size and or have already dropped down in hook size and cannot obtain gauge.
