I'd been reading The Crochet Dude® on blogspot since 2005?! His finished projects were unique and with style back then -- blocks that were bordered in a different way put together in his own join as you go method. He was, and still is, out of the box brilliant.
In the fantastic free online Craftsy class Amazing Crochet Textures Ribbing, Cables & Beads, Drew goes through his techniques on the fine details that can make your post stitch projects pop!
Back then, when there was something to be made, I hopped on over to see his FO photos because they inspired me to be unique. His use of different textured fibers opened my eyes to them early on -- it's no surprise he's got a fabulous line of yarns now!
And back before I started designing, I wondered how bold it is for someone to put a handmade bedspread on the bed to take photos (haha, now I completely understand why - no amount of pretty drapery would show the details otherwise). Although, a combination of laid out photo, close up, and a draped photo does a wonderful job conveying the details plus compliments the item as shown in these photos from his class -- made by Drew.
No matter your crochet experience level, you will brush up on you crochet skills by taking this free mini course offered by Drew through Craftsy.
Now, if you are still reading on, then you must be looking for more details or have some concerns... let's start off with Drew's teaching style.
Teaching Style
Drew teaches with a straight face and a serious tone, however, his humor comes through and makes the mundane a delight.
You get the face-to-face time while he is talking to you about the concepts of the project at hand, and you get a clear overhead view of the crochet stitches, stitch placement he is showing you. He carefully works the details, keeping his hands open and away from the stitch placement area as much as possible.
Where do I get the pattern or list of materials?
Craftsy classes have a detailed “Materials” download section which includes an optional opportunity to purchase a kit to go along with the course, course materials (pattern + chart when available) as well as the handy dandy metric conversion chart.
All downloads are accessible via PDF format, so make sure you have Adobe Reader or a pdf reading app.
I Love Taking Notes on Classes (is there a way take notes here?)
Yes, and it’s awesome. In the middle of a video, if you want to take notes, simply enter your notes right in the “add note” section
After you enter your notes, it also appears as a marker on the timeline, should you want to hover over the marker on the timeline, you will see this:
Yikes, how do I access the notes on one page?
If you want to see your combined notes from the entire course, you can simply click on the orange “Notes” tab at the top of the page and be shown all of your notes throughout the course. Here are 3 example notes on this course in Lesson 3 and in the Finishing sections as you see in the screenshot.
How does this help me with your patterns or crochet in general?
You are at The Crochet Lounge™ page either because you've (hoarded) many of my patterns/pattern shares, have made objects from (some of) my patterns, or saw this post via social media. You might have even noticed that I love cable stitches and have done photo and video tutorials on them. So why ‘another class’?
Because you are learning new cable stitching, getting a different teacher, a different perspective which brings new skills, tips and tricks. Last but not least - it’s FREE!
Also because I will not recommend something to you I would not personally take that can broaden our hobby/small business skills and time together.
